原理
元音字母 a、e、i、o、u、y（y 是半元音字母）分為硬元音 a、o、u 和軟元音 e、i、y，這種分法主要針對 c、g 的讀音規則而言。
我們把 a、o、u 前的 c 稱為“硬C”，發/k/音；e、i、y 前的 c 稱為“軟C”，發/s/音。
同理，a、o、u 前的 g 稱為“硬G”，發/g/音；e、i、y 前的 g 稱為“軟G”，發/dʒ/音。
（英語中只有極少部份 gi、ge、gy 存在例外）正是由於這一條發音規則，所以才有了加-able時，碰到ce、ge結尾的字時不去e，如果去掉了e，則c、g與a相拼，會發成硬音的/k/和/g/。
