Nevertheless 以及 nonetheless 都可以表示轉折。很多人很多課程也提到這兩者基本上可以交替使用。但是，他們之間還是有不同之處。
首先，據語言學家考證，nevertheless 早在14世紀就出現了。而 nonetheless 出現在可考的文獻中比前者晚了好幾個世紀。然額，這點區別對於21世紀學英語的你並沒有什么卵用，這里就是說來玩玩，有興趣的孩紙可以去仔細考究。
詞義差異
歸根結底nevertheless 是有 never, the, 和 less三個詞組合而成；與之相類似，nonetheless是由none,the 和less合成。所以我可以從never與none的詞義差別來區分這兩個詞。
- Never表示 ‘從來沒有’ 或者 ‘永遠不會’等意思，邏輯上與時間有關。所以，nevertheless更多用來講跟之前所提到的信息的聯系或者相關性。通俗地講就是‘前面提到的信息不影響后面的事情或者動作’。 看例句： - It’s raining outside, but he’s still going jogging nevertheless. - There is little chance that we will succeed in changing the law. Nevertheless, it is important that we try. (本例句來自牛津詞典)
- None 本來指數量上的 ‘沒有’。所以 nonetheless更多被用來講可以被量化的情況，比如程度、態度等等。簡單說就是，‘前面所提到的信息在量上不足以削弱后面的事情或者動作’。 - Shanghai is not as big as Beijing, but it’s still a big city nonetheless.(講城市的大小，可量化) - The book is too long but, nonetheless, informative and entertaining. （講這本書的 ‘知識性’和 ‘娛樂性’，也可以量化）
盡管現代英語中對兩者確實不嚴格區分，但對自己語言要求比較高的孩紙們還是可以去鑽研鑽研的。

用法差異
Nevertheless 和nonetheless在句子里的位置很靈活。根據語法規則，它們可以出現在句首，句中或者句末。不過需要注意：
- 出現在句首時，要用逗號跟后面的句子隔開。
- 出現在句中時，前后都需要有逗號。
（其實however也遵循以上這兩種慣例。另外口語中可以不說逗號！）
- 出現在句末時，直接加上去，不用逗號。
但據Jack多年的學習、教學和觀察，nevertheless 用在句首比較多，而nonetheless 用在句末比較多。
為了更進一步求證兩個詞的用法，Jack特意請教了兩位來自美國而且都有十多年在中國教英文經驗的外教。
Jack的問題是：
A: Shanghai is not as big as Beijing, but it’s still a big city NONETHELESS.
B: Shanghai is not as big as Beijing, but it’s still a big city NEVERTHELESS.

外教一
I think from what I’ve read and my own feeling, the twowords can be and are often used interchangeably. However, the position of the word (either before or after the clause it modifies) might make the sentence “feel” more natural to a native speaker. …

A (is right) because it means there is no diminished value. Nevertheless I think of as committing to an idea or action in spite of some reasonable facts. Nonetheless I think as no diminished quality or value.
Nevertheless我覺得是指，盡管有那些事實，但講話人依然認同或者堅持自己的觀點或要去的動作。而nonetheless我感覺是之前提到的固有的因素並不減少(diminish)講話人認為的價值。
For example:
I know science largely has disproven the existence of ghosts. Nevertheless, I still believe. 盡管科學已經基本上證明了鬼並不存在，但我還是認為它們存在。
（Jack: 鬼神存在與否不是一個可以量化的東西，所以他本能地覺得應該用nevertheless。）
